That's a very good point. And you might be correct if this situation happened every morning.

However, this only happened once on that cold morning. The temperature was in the 40 to 50 range and the car was parked outside that night. Ever since then, the temperature has been above 60 in the morning and I never had that jerking issue again, even if I mash halfway on the accelerator after switching from reverse to in Drive.

 

And one more thing, on that cold morning, it didn't just jerk one time, It jerked 4 or 5 times in a row. Back and forth rapidly.

On warm mornings it jerks slightly when I step on the gas after switching gears from reverse to Drive.

 

Sorry mchang40, I didn't clue in that the ES had the CVT in it.

I don't have any experience driving the CVT, just an outlander that has a standard geared transmission.

No need to idle that long it's just a waste of gas.

Less than a minute is more than enough. The aluminum block on the engine dissipates most of the heat while idling even though the computer elevates the RPMs. What you are looking at in the gauge is the temperature of the coolant in the engine - not the transmission.
