Default Lumpy crawling in traffic 2wd, better in 4wd

Hi folks, new to the forum and to my Outlander, its a 2007 UK Elegance model with the VW DI-D 2.0 engine, bought privately. It's just done 100k miles and I'm noticing in crawling traffic its a bit lumpy, stumbling and hesitant in 2WD mode. The tickover seems quite low also, maybe 700 rpm? So far it hasn't stalled, I tend to take it out of gear to remove the shunting effect. But it seems better in 4WD - there's a slight trace of it but much smoother when crawling along in traffic.

Thoughts welcome. The clutch seems fine with no judder and the engine / gearbox not making any worrying noises. Above 2000 rpm alls well in either mode, it pulls good and cruises fine with good MPG (40+).

Thanks all
.
