Default MPG in LPG

Hi all. I am new to this site, I am based on the Isle of Skye in Scotland UK. I have recently been looking at purchasing a Outlander 2004 to 2007 model. they have the 2.4 auto trans (158bhp) powerplant I need to tow my caravan (trailer). The problem is that they seem to return a poor 28 MPG (UK). I notice that some models are fitted with dual LPG, can anyone tell me what sort of MPG I can expect in LPG mode, and are the Mitsubishi fitted LPG systems reliable. Parkers UK Outlander reviews is stating that the it does 28MPG (UK), and in LPG mode 20MPG (UK).....does that sound about right?..Thanks in anticipation

I am in Australia and "officially" Mitsubishi says you can't put LPG on the 2.4lt. The main reason is that they won't warrant the conversion but it doesn't affect any other warrantys. The engine is designed to run on duel fuel anyway and I have been running on LPG for around 20000k. It runs great as the conversion is a vapour injection system from the 6cyl Pajero but minus 2 injectors. There seems to be no power difference and as it automatically switches sequencially from petrol to LPG you can't feel the change over. When it runs out it automatically switches back to petrol. I only have a 40lt usable doughnut tank where the spare was. They cut a hole in the floor and put a plate over it and re-carpeted. I carry tyre plugs; compressor and a can of holts sealant instead of a spare.
I get between 340k and 380k depending on driving conditions. Push hard and you use more of course.
I tow a 1400kg caravan without any problems but you might want to put airbags in the rear springs.
hope this helps.

Thanks for that CALLROSS56...I just love the look of these early outlanders, they look the business,Prices in the UK for these used are low due to their poor MPG, I am viewing an Outlander in 5 days, it is 6 years old with 50,000UK miles on the clock, it has factory fitted LPG, the rear suspension will handle my caravan easily as its a small 2 berth lightweight tourer. thanks for your swift reply. regards paul

TROFLEK FROM HOLLAND SAYS:
I have a 2.4 ltr CVT 4WD 2011 typ with LPG. It runs 8 km per liter when normal driving in ECO mode. Can't make it better as it is.
If you need to tow something buy extra springs for the back. Suspension is rather weak and the LPG tank ways a lot and is "hanging" behind the backwheels.

I'm also new here, from the UK with a recently bought 2004 2.4 outlander on LPG. I'm quite dissapointed with it realy. Only get about 18mpg on LPG and its very low on power. If I want to accelerate above 60mph, I have to drop it down to 3rd. I'm going to get a compression test next week as I suspect the valve seats after running 74k on LPG ??
I have replaced the Lambda sensors and spark plugs with very little improvement.
If mine is typical, then I wouldn't recommend it for towing as it struggles to move itself, especially when cold, it can hardly climb hills!
A shame realy as it is good in other respects, comfortable and practical.

Maybe the 2004 model is the problem as I have a 2009 2.4 on LPG and tow a 1400kg van without any problems even through steep windy roads.

Thanks for all the help folks, I have just recently read on the What car website that the Outlander 04 to 07 model runs the following MPG on a motorway.....Petrol 28mpg.......LPG 20mpg...so Matthewm 1965 yours at 18mpg is about right after all. I have not seen any comments about the Outlander having a lack of power tho, they are known for their perky engine performace with plenty of pull offered up by the variable cam timing which gives them a lot of torque in low revs which coupled through an autobox is ideal for a caravan or any kind of towing. Regards
