uhhhh whats a trim
nope its the size of the wheel. The dimensions that would describe the size of a housing are the A/R. The trim is basically decribing the size of the wheel for either the turbine or compressor. But when you hear someone say its a 50 trim, generally they are talking about the compressor wheel simply because thats the one which is gonna create the presurrized air, and somehow it became a way to name a turbo.
Anyways its a ratio of the two sizes of any wheel. Cuz youll notice the wheel is not the same diameter thoughout. It has a smaller dia on one end and a larger on the other. Well rather than me describe it, here is a good write-up

ok so say you have a t3/t04e 50 trim (common turbo) what the 50 trim part of it is telling you is that the compressor wheels ratio of the inducer dia to the exducer dia. Which here is a quick idea on the calculation.
(these are the actual dia of a 50 trim)
Inducer Dia = 2.122"
Exducer Dia= 3.000"
Trim = (ind dia^2)/(exd DIA^2) * 100
= (2.122^2)/(3.000^2) * 100 (so now do the math)
= (4.5029)/(9.0000) * 100
= 0.5003*100
= 50 <----- there is your 50 trim
Got it

now that all describes the Compressor section which in the naming of the turbo is the To4e section. The turbine section is the T3 part of it. But the trim on the turbine housing is not usually what people look at. Usually its the A/R that is more important. So the next time you look to buy a hybrid turbo this is what they will call it
T3/T04e 50trim 0.63 a/r
so now you know what it all means. Its got a T3 turbine housing with an A/R of 0.63 and its got a t04e compressor housing with a 50 trim wheel.
also FYI i have a write-up of all this stuff in the DIY section. Which is basically a link to the garrett site because i feel they do an excellent job at explaining it all

You know Ive always wondered why it is they called it that... lol, that brings us to learn that previous to my purchsing my 1995 Talon TSi, the engine was replaced with a 6bolt (prolly due to crankwalk) and the turbo was replaced with the hybrid t3/t4... wow, so Im gonna guess whoever had the car before me really cared about it... would this seem correct?
