sooo....might be getting new eclipse...opinions anyone? (pics)
It could go either way... but yea, theres been a relatively large amount of problems with 420a turbos... I just prefer the looks and attributes of Eclipses over Civics and Accords. Though you could make a 420a "like new" for not TOO bad of a price over time. Just... dont expect a crazy amount of performance out of it. They arent race cars, they are DDs.
the only honda i would take, would be a civic hatch. i don't like the coupes, sedans nothing else.
well it's that, or you could do a complete motor swap couldn't you? say, if someone in my area was actually selling a complete gs or gst motor i could do that couldn't i?

How mechanically inclined are you? Or do you have good resources to get things fixed easily?

Yes, you can. A 4g63 motor can be swapped into a frame that currently holds a 420a/6g73 motor, i.e. the RS/GS/my car engine bays. It just needs some things to be fabbed. You've listened to Sebba too much on in regards to that. Is it a drop in? NO, but that's not what was asked. It's not even that hard of a swap if it's done with some knowledge.
...and just to clear up the air on adding a turbo to a 420a....
Yes, you can do it to "boost" the horsepower output a bit.
Yes, it's been done to all sorts of N/A cars without buildups and are still running strong.
Yes, building the motor will and can yield higher horsepower down the road.
No, the 420a isn't a chump motor, no, it's not a turbo motor either...but ask yourselves, what makes a turbo motor a turbo motor? Low compression, stronger internals, and a block that can handle it.
No, the 420a will most likely never get 4g63 horsepower levels...now, let's look at this book and reread. Jstylez is a 21-22 yr old female, a cute one at that, do you guys picture her running down the 1/4 mile trying to achieve even 11 second times? Probably not.
Will a Star or Hahn turbo kit work well for her? IMO, yes. It's a ~$3k kit, but well worth it to most none turbo owners. Hell, why don't you guys ask the Lancer, 3G guys who have done it. No, they're not EVO fast or 2G fast, but they hold their own.
Jenni, IMO, get that turbo'd Eclipse. If that motor blows, it's no different than a 4g63 blowing up.
-seriously, what's different about a 420a knocking it's internals around over a 4g63 guys?
The parts? I'd like to hear why it's a bad idea on boosting an N/A car. Especially when it's only to give the car some zip....not to race down the 1/4. If she likes the turbo enough and wants more, then she can either rebuild that motor or buy a turbo car.

Well, I just don't get it. It will take double the amount to get a good turbo model 2G and most of them have already been put back to stock setups anyway as opposed to putting a turbo on the 420a. At that point, she'll have to spend the $3k-$6k to buy the car and then another $3k or so, to get her new turbo car past the 210bhp level. Where adding a turbo and supporting mods is already around $3k she'll be around stock GS-T/GSX power range and will most likely have "fun" with her car and love it even more. Those Star/Hahn kits come with everything that she will need to support the turbo and tune.
http://www.turbokits.com/eclipse_turbo_kits.html shows what you'll be getting. Looks fairly complete to make a fun car to me.
I doubt she's going to be a "track" girl, not many are. Like a lot of girls, she most likely wants a good looking and "fast" car. The 2G can give her that...along with other cars, but where talking about the Eclipse
.
If she was seriously looking for more, I wouldn't think she would be looking around for another 420a powered car.
IMO, get in the car and test drive it. Take it out for a 10-15 minute drive and get on the turbo in spurts. Have a knowledgable car guy in tow so that the car can be checked on after the test drive.

silver, although your are making some good arguements. I still totally disagree. So lets review, if she would sell the RS and then buy a GST you figure shed have to add maybe another 3k to get one. OR she could turbo the 420a for about 3k and then have the SAME power as a GST. Now what you have is the same power on the engine. And you even said it yourself, the difference in the engines is the compression. That means she would really want to build up the engine. That brings that 3k for the kit alot higher having to do that.
Thats my take on it anyway. And also silver, the last time i read its gonna take a good ammount of money and work to get the 4g63 in there. The easiest way would be tobuy a complete 1g just as a donor. And again its gonna end up costing you more than it would to just buy the GST in the first place.
And also you cant compare it with a 3g. The 3g never came stock turbo'd and hence the only option is to turbo the car from where it is. Also the 4g64 can handle boost alot better than the 420a. All im saying is they made a turbo model for a reason. Its the more "cost effective" solution no matter how you add the #'s
