Default Fuel pump looses power when plugged in???

Hey guys, I need some advise. I found this forum, and I am impressed with the infomation here. After several searches, I have not found a solution to my problem, so I hope somebody can help.

I am helping out a realitive whos wife's 95 Eclpise (2.0L non turbo) would not start. I checked for spark, and both coils had a good hot spark. I depressed the schrader valve on the fuel rail, and no pressure. I cranked it over while depressing the valve and still no pressure. I accessed the fuel pump, and using a test light probed for power at the plug. I got battery voltage while cranking. I decided to pull the pump and the wires going from theaccess plateto the pump itself looked good, so I decided the pump must be bad. I replaced the pump, strainer and filter. Still no fuel to the rail!!!??!?!

I checked for power to the plug again, as well as ground. Both were good. I decided to directly wire the battery to the plug on the fuel pump access plate and the pump came on??? The car started and ran fine... I checked the amp draw on the pump while it was connected to the battery directly, and it was about 3.8 amps.

I pierced the hot wire to the pump just behind theconnector that plugs into the access plate. I have power to the plug (cranking), but as I plug it into the male side on the access plate, the power "goes away" when connection is made????

I have never ran into this. The only thing I can think of is that the relay is defective and "poping open" when it has a load on it.

Before I posted, I did several searches and found nothing similar to my situation. My plan of action is to replace the relay and see if this resolves the issue. I know I can do a puel pump rewire, but that is more than I would like to do at this point. I am also nervous that the relay will not get a good "trigger" signal from the original power wire, and will not work.

Any suggestions? I believe the fuel pump relay is under the center console, or it is behind the radio or on the firewall. I will replace/swapp them all.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

You're looking for the right item, Mike. The fuel relay is located on the firewall (engine side). Does your relative have an auto or manual tranny? Here's more info about the firewall relays for the N/A... https://mitsubishiforum.com/m_137146/tm.htm
The car's issue could be the fuel or ASD relay, or something entirely different. But when you connect the pump directly to power, the car starts and runs fine. This also leads me to believe that it could be one or both of those relays.
