Random & infrequent throttle control malfunction P2135
Anyone have any tips for this PITA issue? The truck has twice done this, once in short/slow town driving doing 40mph, and once on the Interstate doing 75mph, both at full operating temp in a warm climate:
Randomly lost 90% of its power, idles and runs smoothly, but has a top speed of 40mph on level hardtop. Or 5mph on a slight dirt hill. It can be turned off and restarted, but the issue only ceases if it sits for about 10 minutes or more.
2003 Mitsubishi Montero Limited 3.8L, 221,000 miles. Timing components good. All stock. Usually runs great. Owned for the last 50,000 miles.
Again, this problem stops when Montero is turned off and restarted 5 or 10 minutes later.
I've had these 2 codes for the last 30,000 miles. No cat issues that I can tell. I figured they were unimportant or gremlin causes. Truck has good operation otherwise. Good fuel mileage. Usual power. Dependable.
P0421 / P0431 Banks 1 & 2 catalysts below thresholds.
When thw throttle issue first happened 1,200 miles ago these 3 codes popped up:
P2135: Pedal & throttle switch A/B voltages.
P0335: Crankshaft position sensor A circuit.
P0340: Camshaft position sensor A Circuit Bank 1.
I've checked it out and no issues or bad wires I can see. Ohm tested TPS and it seems good. Pedal function tests good.
I also cleaned the throttle body as it was a little dusty but not bad, and reset the codes. They haven’t come back but I've only idled and revved it for about 15 minutes in my driveway.
The MAF readings, throttle position %, fuel trims %, and timing advance matches my other 2003 3.8L with almost the exact same mileage.
Anyone have any leads other than guessing it's an intermittently failing PCM, or a wire I can't see that may be randomly failing? Or have this happen to you?
Thanks!
