Because you can wind the car up better. Assuming you've got a manual, you hold the handbrake up and rev the engine, easing out the clutch until you feel it strain against the brake. Now your ready to launch. With practice you can do it very smoothly and it makes the car actually leap off the line an doesn't tend to induce wheel spin as easy as simply flooring it. Thats why. Try it, you might find it surprisingly effective

thats a good one, never thought of that, ill have to try that, oh, and as far as the CAI goes, you can cut off the dead end snorkle and stick a cone filter on it, then take out the regular filter from the box, works great.............

After re-reading this thread, i forgot to mention one of my most prized launch technique secrets! It's how to lock the drive wheels with an open diff. First, put the car in reverse and slip the clutch, going back *very* slowly for only a half a foot or so. Then press the clutch and shift to first. Now you're ready. This works best when you do a 3500rpm clutch dump. Both front wheels hook up consistently for the first few feet, so it's pretty effective on the light power fwd(by light i mean under 250hp). On higher power cars, i've noticed that both wheels will incur quite a bit of wheelspin at first, and then the power is only directed to one wheel. Remember, slipping the clutch will "unlock" the diff a little quicker, so this pretty much only works on clutch dumps. We've been doing it on 1g's and 2g's here, and a couple of other honda's, and it works pretty well. Just an FYI, The person who showed me this said he heard it originated by watching a scene on F&F. It's the scene when that dude is pulling out of vin deisels driveway in the honda, and then peels out lighting up the front tire. He said someone must have tried to throw their honda in first from a rolling reverse and light up the front tire, but instead lit up both tires. I dunno if it's true, but....hey it works. And now you guys know. Don't say i never helped you guys!

I forgot to say, when you roll back, only do so for a few inches and then stop the car. Make sure you're stopped when you shift from reverse to first. Then you're ready. Just rev and dump the clutch. It takes a little getting used to, and getting it right takes practice, but it does help quite a bit. Don't worry about the sounds you might hear coming fom your tranny, it's only a problem when you see pieces of the tranny in your rear view mirror. As a disclaimer, this works pretty good, but i have no idea how it affects your transmission. I mean, we've been doing it for quite a long time now, and none of us have had any problems with our cars. But we do know it's probably not good for the shift forks or diff. So do at you own risk, but from my experience's, i haven't seen any adverse effects of this technique.
