Default HELP!! 4g64 to 4g63

Ok, here is my question. I was informed that the 1st generation eclipse 2.4l were the 4g63 and were a better engine than in my 2nd generation 98 eclipse with the 4g64 2.4l. Is this correct?? I was also told that if I switch the heads on these I would get a pretty good power gain. So if I do switch the 4g63 heads on to my 98 is it going to be worth the trouble? I have a little bit of cash and was just looking to do something different first instead of doing all th regular bolt ons which will come later. My eclipse is bone stock all the way around, just would like to get a little bigger power jump, I asked about a turbo for my car a few times but have gotten 0 responses to were I can get one or if I can use a setup off of a different car. Any input on this would help me, Thanks

Yes there is a 4g63 engine I have it in my eclipse. It's the 2.0L DOHC engine. But I'm in a worse predicament LOL mine is dead completely right now looking into whether I should rebuild or scrap and restart with a different block. I also am seeking knowledge about turbos for the 4g63 block and where I can get the parts. The car I have was stock w a turbo but the engine and tranny have BOTH been changed so now it's a non turbo auto instead of turbo manual.

OK.....I know exactly what you are talking about with the 4g64 to 4g63 conversion. I have a 4g64(JE pistons, Eagle rods) in my GSX now. I also had the same exactly bottom end in my 98' Spyder GS(RIP). The head swap is not exactly as easy as most people think. Its bolt up is pretty easy but most of the electronics wiring is completely different. The turbo setup is direct bolt on from a stock turbo model with the 4g63. You can use all parts from the 2nd generations and about 90% of the parts off of a 1st generation. Just do your research and ask anything else you want to know and we'll try to help you out whenever possible. Me and SpyderGS both have LOTS of experience with the conversion so just let us know what u need. Jeff.

Wait a sec hold up explain this again?? I have the 4G63 in mine and I'd like to drop a turbo in it when I rebuild the engine (Might as well go all out right?) Do I need to change the head? I was told the only thing you have to do is change the valves to a larger valves and the obvious manifold and exhaust changes. But then you're saying that the head change isn't hard hard except the electronics. Now I've also been told that it's a bad idea to have the auto tranny with a turbo setup. Bear in mind I have the body of a '92, the engine of a '94 and the tranny of a '96. Supposedly there is a performance computer for the engine and a performance computer for the tranny in the car already. I tend to believe that because the old computers are in my hands right now (The car is still in Florida right now). Any ideas on which direction I should go with it? Turbo or not? What general concensus on the stability of the block and tranny when turboed?

Ok this is what I have taken from this, please correct if wrong. I can use parts from a 2nd Gen 4g63 2.0l on my 4g64 2.4l motor?? So if I want to convert my 98 eclipse to a turbo but still want the 2.4l I can use the parts from the 4g63 2.0l. This just does not sound right so please let me know if this is it. If I am wrong explain the right way of doing this. Thanks for all the help so far.

yea, for the head swap you use parts off a 2g 4g63 motor, the problem you run into is again the wiring and the 4g63 is dohc and the 4g64 is sohc so the compression ratio is different.

So if I just swap the heads out on the car how much difference will it make. Do you think that it would be worth the trouble to do all that, any HP increase that I can expect? Thanks
