The water pump is driven by your timing belt, not one of the accessory belts. If you only have a short drive, you should have enough power in your battery to get you there. Just don't turn on the lights, radio, defogger, fans as they will drain your battery faster. Make sure the belts that are off the pulley are removed, you wouldn't want them getting tangled up in anything causing more problems.

Just for reference, one belt runs your a/c and alternator, the other one runs your power steering pump.

Also when my accesory belt came off, you can drive with but when the battery starts running low it starts to stall out, so If you can't find a friend to drive you to the shop and take your car, just keep on the gas at stops and lights because it will shut off and you wont be able to start it back up.

You do not want to keep on the gas, because it uses more power then. If anything, you want to keep as low RPM as possible, and as far out of throttle as possible. Also, take the most direct route with the least stops possible - the braking system and lights will drain more than their fare share of power - even use your parking brake a bit more since it's only electrical componet is the warning light.

If you fully charge your battery before you go, you should get about 15-20 mins of normal city usage.

Hi,

Thanks again to everyone for the excellent advice. I did drive the car into the shop on Friday. It was very hot outside and I found out (as many of you had noted) the water pump is NOT affected by that particular belt. I had no trouble with it overheating at all. The battery was also fine for the short drive.

The only problem was trying to track down that pulley that had broken off. My mechanic called everywhere trying to find that pulley and called a bunch of junk yards as well. He eventually had to order it from Mitsubishi and it will take 4 days to get it here.

Anyway....thanks so much.

-A
