Any high mile Montys out there??

Not biased. I based my opinion on the research that I have done. This I why I decided to buy the 2003-06 Montero . 2001-02 models dont have the stability control system and the three point seat belt for added safety. The 01-02 has the 3.5L engine but for just a slight bit more money I went for the 03-06 model(3.8l 215hp) which gives me more power.
I looked around the net and noticed way more 01-02 used montero's than there were the 2003-2006 Monteros. I wonder why? But by far I saw way more Montero sports looking to be sold than full sized montero's.

I rarely see full size Monteros here compared to the sport for sale . . They seemto me to be the wifes grocery getter more than the sport So cal.

2001 montero sport with 337,647
My montero sport that I just sold had very high mileage but It was time for a new/used one so I sold it for 600 cash as is. This old SUV had bad front cam seals and It was leaking real bad and it had a one bad catalytic converter, and I posted it on offer up with all problems and someone wanted it so I sold it to them. It was hard to let it go but it was about that time. That same day I got a used one with 116,348 for $1100 and this one is very clean.

Gen 2 like new
Original owner of 94 SR 3.5 DOHC. Runs just as good as the first day. 128,000 miles. I've always used OEM parts and have never been stranded. Water pump/belts/hoses/spark plugs every 60,000 miles.
Heck, the first water pump lasted 80,000 miles. So, I decided to stay with OEM. No comparison between OEM vs Chinese parts. Japanese parts rock.
These gen 2 motors will easily do 350,000 if well maintained.
*Replace lower plenum with updated model. Butterfly valves are known to rattle loose and destroy engine. This is an interference engine, so maintenance is paramount.
Nothing like a Montero. Means Mountain Hunter in Spanish!
Cheers,
Krieg!

the same vehicle
IT IS THE EXACT SAME VEHICLE. The Engine is basically the only difference... and 0.3L will not change it's rollover stats.

1st Monti was a 01 XLS, sold it with 205g and have kept in touch with the buyer. It now has over 300 and only basic maintenance.
Bought a 03 limited two years with 65g on it, currently has 120 and is a P.O.S.
Electrical, suspension problems and a evap leak that cant be found.

I have a problem with my 2001 Montero XLS rear brakes. I took her to the shop - the backend was shuddering when I slowed the vehicle with the brakes. Yes, you would immediately think "warped rotor". The shop replaced brakes on all fours. A few weeks later, I felt the shuddering again. It only happens after I have been driving for about 15 minutes or more, is my guess. Never when just going to the grocery story a mile away.
I took it back to the shop, and the mechanic said he took the rear tires off and lubed up the calipers. Next week I noticed the shuddering again, and called the mechanic. He mentioned that it might be the master cyclinder. I'm wondering if it could be something simpler, such as a faulty caliper or maybe the hose?
If it was the master cylinder, would it only make one rear (drivers side rear) brake "drag"? It appears as if the caliper is always squeezing down on the disk, since the disk gets HOT... over 100 degrees hotter than the other side. I can smell the brakes after 15-20 minutes of driving. I can splash some water on the rim and it poofs away in the form of steam like a hot pancake griddle with water on it.
My question is this: Could it be the master cyclinder, or is it likely the caliper? Has anyone else had this issue?

tdennehy,
I had that same issue for a few months. Took off the rotors and noticed I had a siezed caliper. Changed out the caliper from Autozone (core charge included was just under 100 bucks), they gave me back the core charge after I changed it out. Works like a champ after that. Now, my vehicle is a 2001 Montey LTD, a little different, so not sure about your brakes being identical to my own. But it wouldn't hurt to do the check yourself. My rotor was EXTREMELY warped from the heat, so I changed out to some slotted/drilled rotors as well, for about 130 dollars from Amazon as well. Now, got some great brakes!
