Default Auto Transmisssion will not shift

2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS,with 56,000 miles. Live in central Florida, lately weather got very cold and in the morning transmission will not engage, either forward or backing up. I have to wait( 10 minutes) until the engine gets warm, and the will engage with a sudden jump. After awhile transmision will run with no problems.
I think it could be a sensor of some kind that has to reach a certain temperature to allow the transmission to shift.
I appreciate any input with this issue!
Thanks!

Have you tried a fluid transfer using MM ATF?
