Default I was going to the local

Checkers, since living in Hawaii EVERYTHING is wayy more costly to buy, and the dealership here looks seedy anyway. I'll let you know how it goes once I buy all the parts and how the quality is for them.

K, thanks obakemono, pretty neat that you still have a Checker Auto, all of ours are O'reilly's now. That stinks that everything is so expensive because of your location though!

mmsa2, I think the SOHC is interference also, thats the engine I have, SOHC 24v 6g72 3.0L, the OLDER SOHC 6g72 3.0L TWELVE (12) valve might not be, but the 1997 and on SOHC 24v 6g72 are interference for sure.

Have a looky,

Default Need to have my heads done

I would think the DOHC 24 valve would be just as long lived, but I have never owned one.
TDF, Based on what I am reading you have no problem with high mile lower ends? I have the aweful tick and very low compression in cylinder 2. I HATE the tick. What parts to you recommend I have on hand when I take the heads off to have them sent out to the machine shop? The truck is a 1994 Montero 3.0 SOHC with 189K on the clock. Would you change the fuel injectors at this time? Oil seals? What causes the tick anyway? I have to get this done this month because I am do for a California Smog Check and there is no way I will pass with one cylinder down.

In answer to Monty98''s question re: belt replacement intervals.

The owner's manual says 60K and that's what any shop who wants the business will tell you. HOWEVER: If you look at the fine print in the owner's manual it says that for California and a few other states the interval is 100K.

I would guess that comsumer protection laws in those states have caused Mitsu to "fess up" on the life of the belts. (No way they put special belts in trucks for a few states.)

So you're right at the normal mileage for a belt swap IMO, IF the old one is a Mitsu OEM belt. I have no idea what the typical life of any of the aftermarket belts would be. BTW, I also went to Mitsu for my replacement belt. For a few extra bucks it was worth the piece of mind. My last OEM belt was changed at 110K and still looked brand new.

Default Update

Hey all,
Well I cured allot of my ills on the monty when I changed the oil and filter. I went with a K&N filter and 20W50 oil (mineral). It helped to shut up the one noisy lash adjuster and my oil leaks are much less. I changed the timing belt since I did not know the history of the engine, and I am glad I did. The automatic adjuster had seized and the belt was loose. I'm lucky that the belt did not skip a tooth. Also, the Monty has 111,000 on the clock and the belt was a Mitsu. I don't know when the belt was changed last, but it was 1/4" longer than the new belt I installed. I plan on doing my timing belt every 60k now, since it is not that hard to change (took me 8 hrs, but with knowing what I need to do now I could do it in 6).
Now I need to cough up 60.oo for tranny fluid from the dealer and change my filter and fluid. Then I'll be changing the sparkplugs next. Then wheel bearings. Brakes. Brake bleed.
