Hi guys, first post here. My wife's 2017 Outlander Exceed Turbo Diesel has in the last week developed an issue where it has a loss of power and surging when going up hills. Initially I suspected transmission, so today I did a service including draining and replacing engine oil and transmission fluid. The symptoms are still there, but I noticed when taking it for a drive that it's blowing a significant amount of black smoke on acceleration. I'm unsure if this is new or I just didn't notice it before. I also noticed before I did the service, when trying to diagnose the issue after my wife raised it, that it sounded like the turbo wasn't spooling, or not spooling correctly. Normally with the window down on accel the driver can hear the spool, and a subtle plumb back bov on throttle off. There is a whooshing sound, not like turbo spool, and no discernible bov sound since the drop in power. From my research it seems like excessive black smoke is due to possible overfuelling from a turbo issue. Can anyone shed any light on what the issue may be?

 

Oh also, I should mention, at no point has there been any CEL.

 

Is there a split in your intake pipe going to the inlet manifold?

That is quite a common fault. I am assuming your car has a 4N14 2.2d power unit and not one of the VAG units

 

I'd have to double check which engine it's got to make certain. A few others have mentioned a possible split in the intake pipe, I couldn't see anything with a visual inspection however, but it does live up to the idea that it kinda came on all of a sudden. I took it for a bit of a drive before, it seems most noticeable in 3rd, lots of black smoke and very hesitant under load, then kinda starts to get moving as the revs climb and the black smoke goes away a bit, that being said the whole car feels under powered. We usually drive in 4wd Eco and with Eco mode on, however after this issue we've had to turn Eco mode off as it's borderline undriveable in Eco mode.
