Will someone have to have a seat collapse before anything is done?
3rd row in Outlander anyway has very little to do with safety.

Some 2-3 mm slack just cannot make it worse.

You guys didn't notice this when yours is new?

I have a 2009 outie (manual seat) and I have play in it as well. I actually got Mitsubishi to replace the seat assembly, but the same thing happens. It also happens it all the ones that were on the lot!!! However, the passenger side is firm.

Design flaw!

if the passenger side doesn't do it and they are both manual seat, there is got to be a fix.. but seems like it maybe a mounting issue rather than the seatback, also seems to apply to both manual and power seats.

The driver seat does have a raise / lower ability so the problem would be in this part alone. One of the comment on the youtube vid said set the seat front high and the rear low and it won't do it.

Is it bad enough to make you hate the car?

Is it enough to make me hate the car? Absolutely not. I love the car. I don't notice the seat anymore.
