Info on the outlanders 4wd system
#21
This is taken out of the Outlander service manual
"As the vehicle is intended for on-road use, long-time driving on a sandy or slushy road must be avoided. When the vehicle is driven on a sandy or slushy road for a long time, the fail-safe function of the electronic control 4WD system tends to enter the protective control mode which switches the control from 4WD to 2WD gradually in order to protect the drive system, and the indicators ("4WD" and "LOCK") tends to illuminate"
If you are looking for an offroad vehicle you might be better served by something else.

In Colorado Ive used it for up to 3 hrs of continous use in snowy conditions (up the snow packed mountain) without a problem. What they are saying is that if you have it in any 4wd mode for a long time and the tires are spinning alot for that time (ice, sandy, slush) then it could go to the fail-safe system so that it wont over heat and damage the system. So if you are doing doughnuts in the snow steadily for 2hrs this will probably occur
During normal driving in icy, slushy, sandy conditions the slippage doesnt happen all the time.... unless you are just straight gunning it for miles at a time...
