Question Redlining in Sportstronic mode?

Hello,

I have the Outlander ES with AWD and sportstronic. I read somewhere that all cars that have SportsTronic transmission will automatically shift up if you redline. Or it will reduce the amount of gas going to your engine. Or both.
I have 3 questions...
1. Has anybody tried this?
2. Did the transmission automatically upshift by 1 gear or did it automatically reduce power (gas) to the engine?

3. Has anybody tried this and redlined for more than 3 seconds and damaged the engine because the car did not automatically upshift?
And I know, of course, that if you are in 6th gear, it would not upshift and you could ruin your engine. (or would it automatically restrict fuel to the engine?)

P.S.
I am aware that this is bad for your engine and your fuel economy. I am also aware that if the engine broke due to abuse, and Mitsubishi found out about it, they will not cover it under warranty.

I'm just asking this out of curiosity. I'm afraid of taking it above 5 rpm.

Thank you,

I've also read that most cars today have built in protection from redlining. If I remember correctly they do it by cutting/reducing the fuel supply to the engine.

I doubt you could easily damage the engine. The engine is designed to handle more than the car allows...and an electronic limiter is in place to prevent you from doing it. Yes, it will upshift when it gets near it. In the worst case, you will need more frequent oil changes for redlining frequently.

I am guessing your ES has a CVT transmission...so the gears are only simulated. Combined that with an I4 engine, and there is no way you can reach redline in practice unless you put it into neutral, as the ratio will just keep increasing on the transmission.

I've found that when you redline it (in the 2.4 CVT in manual mode) it hits the limiter for a second or two then just slightly upshifts and reduces revs just a tad and it sits at that. I much prefer this to sudden unintended upshifts like some cars.
I doubt you will damage your car by redlining it, thats the whole reason for the limiter. Of course if you do it regularly don't expect the car to last too long.
