I rarely use it.. only time I can recall using it is when I take a long onramp curve slightly uphill.. For some reason when I give it a bit of gas it will upshift into 6th..so I just flick the paddle and return it to normal when I get up to speed

I've used it on long downward grades to help keep the speed steady without riding the brakes.Usually when I shift over to sport mode I'm in 6th gear, and when I shift down to 5thit holds the speed steady without braking.

Same here, having the same car 2.4L CVT, I use manual shift mode primarily for engine braking or quicker accelerations if really needed.

This manual mode will not save any gas for you and that is for sure. Automatic shifting is very optimised for smooth city cruising and you won't see a difference on highway at steady speed.
