Might be a little late now and you may have it fixed but...
Had the same sort of problem. After a but of messing around I turned out to be a broken track in the clock spring. They wanted a few £££ to replace.
Its a common fault as the wire rubs. Bad design.
On he end I went to beakers yard and had the full unit out of a mitx gallant. The spring was different as was the connectors but the soldering iron helped to replace. The housing was the same so £5 and a bit of time.
You need to take the wheel off and airbag out.
