I have a 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander GX4 2.2 DI-D, 6-speed manual transmission, 45k miles on the clock.

It has recently developed a strange whirring noise from the engine which (after 2 weeks of investigation) my local Mitsubishi dealer cannot identify with any certainty.

The noise is apparent when the vehicle is started from cold.

If I were to let the car sit there running, the noise will eventually go away after about 5 mins.

But if I were to start driving, the whirring noise becomes quite loud when I change gear ... in other words, at the point when I have pressed the clutch and taken my foot off the accelerator. And then as mentioned above, the noise goes away after 5 mins driving.

If any one has any ideas or advise, I would be very grateful.

Need to be a bit more descriptive.
Id be looking at fan clutch or other things that move.

 

Haaa, The Stealership is usually pretty good with this. I guess the warranty is up..lol

 

I had a similar cold start noise on a BMW 3 series a few years ago and after much research found the culprit was the one way clutch on the alternator pulley seized up. Replaced the pulley and problem sorted.
