Default Sudden loss of power whilst towing

Hi guys

I use my 2009 outlander to tow a RIB probably weighing about 1.2t. It does an excellent job of it and is great for launching.

On two occasions now though I have suddenly lost power whilst crusing at 60mph on the motorway to the extent that the speed gradually drops off to 30-40mph (on the flat) and will not pick up again even if downshifting.

On both of these occasions I've been forced to limp off the motorway and find a service station. At lower speeds the car felt very sluggish and was really struggling to pull away.

I unhitched the trailer and checked the wheels were turning fine (the wheels were cool and I'm pretty sure that this is not an issue with the trailer brakes etc.). Taking the car for a quick drive it felt fine and back to normal. I then hitched the trailer back up and the problem has gone away and did not return for the rest of the journey (approx 150 miles).

The two times it has happened have been on separate journeys and after a couple of hours of driving. It has only ever happened whilst towing.

The engine temperature was reading normal and there were no error lights on the dash.

The only thing I can think of are that it is some sort of software issue and switching the car off and back on seems to resolve it?

Does anyone have any ideas before I take it into the dealer?

Thanks

Chris

I think overheating of the differential or transfer case would cause the "limp home" mode. According to the manual should be a warning on the dash display when the car goes into this mode to protect the powertrain.

Thanks for that. I do have the 2.0 di engine and your thread sounds very similar to what is happening. Unfortunately the car is just out of warranty!

Makes sense but there is definately no warning light on the dash (I made a point of looking last time the problem happened)

Thanks guys!

Its a VW engine, so its normal. Apparently the turbo will destroy itself by design.
Mitsubishi stopped using that engine in 2010 I believe, probably due to being so unreliable.

I would sell it if you can, since I don't recall of there being a solution except replacing the turbo every couple of years.
