Its cheaper and safer to say you need a new belt now then hit you with a bill for an engine rebuild if they just do the belt and not try to get you to do both. If you see what I mean.
+1 on that, I opted out of changing my water pump at my first timing belt R/R, it failed catastrophically 40 thousand kms later and destroyed my engine. I just finished putting a new one in. Change your pump every timing belt R/R, its only about 200$, not a scam at all.
