Red face Mitsubishi montero sport 2002 dead

Hello Fellow Members,

I'd like to mention first of all that its relieving to find this forum.
Secondly, that this is the 2nd montero sport I own thanks to the first experience with the same model.

The day before Yesterday, I was driving and one of the belts woke up wining; later the revs started dropping below normal at every stop light for a second or two; the engine then turned off a couple of times but I was able to drive to the discount outoparts where I had just purchased a batt; they tested the batt and they said it was bad so they changed it; I drove out and it was all good for a couple of miles until the revs started dropping again; this time a horrible rotten egg smell came into the cabin and suddenly the wipers came on like ghosting; I pressed the gas further and the back-shield wiper went on; I would decelerate and the wipers would stop. A couple of blocks down the car went dead and I inched it into a parking lot.

So I took the car to the mech and estimates went over 2 grand!... but they wouldn't give me an explanation... They said the estimate was for worst case scenario and that they would have to start with a 3 hour diagnostics procedure.

So I thought I'd lay out there for the guys with the real Mittsubishi knowledge and expertise: you guys!

1...The engine sounds like it were about to fire up, but doesn't.
2...The battery was spoiled and was the cause of the rotten smell.
3...Battery and Starter were replaced and still nothing.
4...There is gasoline coming out the exhaust pipe.

Any monty savies out there? Please?
I like my SUV.

Thanks in Advance.

I have a 89 montero and my RPMs would also drop below normal and sometimes die when stopped. I changed out my O2 sensor and all is well with that. For the gasoline coming out of your tailpipe make sure it's not water first because that is a VERY long way for gasoline to travel. It's most likely condensation sticking to cold pipes. But if it IS gasoline then it could be the fuel pressure regulator. My buddys yota had the same problem and that is what it was.

Thanks for the input Jimi... And yes, its definitely gas what's coming out of the exhaust.
The valves seem to stay open when cranking and the engine won't start with new batt and starter.
