Mitsubishi Montero & Montero SportThis sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.
So close This is my 4th one. 2 Sports and 2 full size. I'll never not get enough of these!
I just missed the rollover to 270k in My SR Montero. Damnit!
Just passed smog after replacing o2 sensors. Had some oil leaks and shop replaced some gaskets. Had the vehicle since 55K miles.
Its still nice to drive around but with gas prices in the mid $3s, and with the horrible (in comparison to vehicles today) MPG, its just not economical to drive everyday.
I just got an oil changed today on my 96 LS and got it washed, it has nearly 229000 miles and it does burn oil, leak it into the alternator and having to replace it every 7-8 months which sucks! And a new thing recently is that the car makes continuous rattling/knocking sound from engine, sounds like some bearings in the engine are worn, other than that the car drives really strong and smoothly on the road.
I had that rattling sound for almost a year straight. It was the belt tensioner/timing belt. It snapped finally while driving on freeway and went into limp mode. But that was at 205,000 miles. Changed out timing belt and tensioner. Noise completely gone. Lucked out as far zero bent valves. It currently has 212,000 miles and I drive it everyday. I love the vehicle but they have **** poor resale value and people are skeptical of them. Which kind of works out because I can buy another one cheap when this finally goes out. Its leaking a little oil but shifts like a dream
Clytnjms......Funny you mentioned oil leaking on your alternator. The 99 Monty SR (with rear locker) also had that issue by prior owner......and I think that after replacing a couple alternators, he just got some metal flashing and fabricated an "oil drip shield" all around the top half of the alternator to keep the oil out. It just needed new valve cover gaskets, and those rear cam seals replaced....now she does not leak a drop, and no need for an alternator oil drip shield.
Those looking for a good cheap one.....check out my For Sale ad for another 99 Monty, fully loaded with all options.....for $1000.
1998 Montero Sport LS RWD 223K Miles on the body and transmission. Just replaced the engine with a used 120k motor due to buggered crank snout threads but I'm 100% sure it could have gone a lot further. I still have to get the hub caps to fit on the front and I've taken off the running boards due to rust concerns on the boards themselves.
